“I love your dog — he’s so beautiful!”

She was young and dressed impossibly well for someone doing light gardening in her front yard. My Siberian sensed he had a fan and leaned against his leash to get as close to her as he could.

“His eyes — they’re so neat! They’re different colors! Aw, I love these dogs — I want one!”

Her husband stood behind her, smiled at me, and nodded.

“They shed a lot, you know,” he warned.

“Oh, it’s ok. I don’t mind that!” She slowly extended a flat palm for my dog to sniff and then gently reached forward to scratch his ears.

“Aww…”

They were mutually smitten. My leash-imprisoned dog dragged me closer to the soft hands caressing his face and the sweet voice singing his praises. Just leave me here, he seemed to say.

Then her eyes caught sight of my leggings. They were black and provided a striking backdrop for every piece of dog hair. You could measure my dog’s height from the ground up to the point just above my knees where the hair layer stopped.

“Wait — is that his hair on your pants?”

“Yep.”

She laughed, glanced at her husband, and said “Ok, I changed my mind — I don’t want this breed.” She stepped back and kept her loving gaze directed at my husky, but now from a safe distance.

We exchanged pleasantries as she smiled and waved goodbye, turning back to her yard work. My dog and I resumed our walk, my leggings getting furrier with every sideswipe from his shedding torso.
